3-0 win seals Tintern's cup dream

ROGIET'S hopes ofan East Gwent treble were sunk by a more experienced Tintern Abbey side who scored twice in the last 15 minutes to ensure victory in an entertaining Benevolent Cup Final.

Third Division champions Rogiet started well against their Division One opponents andthe Tintern defencewere kept busy in the opening exchanges with some probing passes from Rogiet's Rory Prettyjohn. Then on 20 minutes a free kick 30 yards out saw Prettyjohn hit a fine shot which hit the Tintern crossbar.

Soon after at the other end, Daley Gittings in the Rogiet goal pulled off two fine saves in successionto keep the scores level. Rogiet's top scorer Richie Wood was then unlucky to see his 25 yard shot also hit the crossbar and his brother Rob,seeing the keeper stranded on the edge of the penalty box, hit a fine effort which was just wide.

Tintern began to fight their way back into the game and towards the end of the first half their defence pushed forward and were soon rewarded with several corners. On 40 minutes a poor Rogiet clearance found Alex Bell unmarked inside the box and he made no mistake with a powerful shot into the corner for a 1-0 half time lead.

The second half continued to entertain with end-to-end footballand with Tintern's Sam Marmont having a great game in defence, the best of the Rogiet attacks were coming from midfield with captain Joe Jenkins bursting through twice to fire over the bar. Dan Chiu also ran box to box to shoot just wide.

Then, on 75 minutes, the game swung towards Tintern when a fine cross from the right found Tom Marmont in the crowded area and his first time effort beat the keeper from close range. Two goals up, the Tintern forwards started to create problems for the Rogiet defence with good diagonal passing and running off the ball and they were further rewarded five minutes from time when Shane Bollen added a third with afine header.

The man of the match was also a close run affair with Rogiet's Chris Huggett and Prettyjohn in contention but it was Tintern's Marmont who deservedly took the honours.
