Leisure centre closure ‘is disgraceful’
THE demolition of the Blaenavon Leisure Centre and Swimming Pool has been described as disgraceful' by Assembly Member Mohammad Asghar.
He spoke out after telling the Welsh Assembly First Minister Rhodri Morgan that the cost of the London Olympics aquatics centre had trebled while councils in South East Wales, such as Torfaen, were closing community swimming polls.
Mohammad Asghar, who is a Plaid Cymru Assembly Member for South East Wales, said: "A recent poll found that three out of four people thought the London Olympics would not bring real benefits to their area.
"While I am a big sports fan, the money being spent has gone out of control.
"It is disgraceful that the Olympics aquatics centre has more than trebled in cost to nearly a quarter of a million pounds while councils, such as Torfaen, are closing community swimming pools."
Mr Asghar also told the First Minister that good causes in the South East Wales area would lose out by more than £20m with lottery money going to the Olympics and regeneration of London.
He said this included an estimated £3.3million in Torfaen and he urged the First Minister to do what he could to make sure Wales did not lose out because of the money being spent on the London Olympics.

Isn't this all to late? Why speak out about it now? Sadly the centre and swimming pool have gone, which is a major lost not only yo Blaenafon but the area in general. Why dont people emove on and channel their energies in getting a new centre and pool into the north of Torfaen? I'm not sure why political voices are now being being aired the damage is done, lets move on.
